Not the unhealthy sugar-free
This plant is stevia, a natural sweetener sans the aspartame . It is hated by the sugar-free industry as it is a competition for them. And it is more dangerous to their business because it is naturally occurring and non-GM, hence cannot be patented. It is the ideal substitute for sugar for diabetic patients and those who worry about the waistline. And it does not come with the very toxic aspartame as the commercial artificial sweeteners. Any responsible doctor will tell you that aspartame affects the brain and can cause memory loss, seizures, headaches, depression, anxiety and many more serious health defects. The FDA and other health polices approve a dangerous substance like aspartame without hesitation but strictly bans stevia in many countries. Stevia, which is nothing but a very useful and “innocent” (it isn’t even a psychoactive drug like marijuana!) plant, has been labeled by the FDA as an unsafe food additive! It was declared so with the help of a very partial and unscientific study.
A 1985 study reported that steviol, a breakdown product from stevioside and rebaudioside (two of the sweet steviol glycosides in the stevia leaf), is a mutagen in the presence of a liver extract of rats pretreated with a PCB blend — but this finding was criticized on procedural grounds that the data were mishandled in such a way that even distilled water would appear mutagenic.
